JD 4430 Hydraulic SCV Valve Question

I have a JD 4430 really tight tractor but the SCV's seem to be a little sloppy and leak some. They are original JD SCV's. I know they will leak a little changing hoses and all. Where you plug the hose into the SCV it seems quite loose and the hoses will pop out going around corners if the hoses get the slightest tug on them. What can I do to fix this? Also on the left SCV (Looking at the back of the tractor) hydraulic fluid leaks out of one of the "shafts" when you turn the little handle to turn the valve on. What needs to be done to cure this problem? Thanks for any advice!

Sounds like a couple breakaway coupler overhaul kits is all you need. The kits from JD will come with seal kits (including your lever seals) and the dteel barrel assemblies as well. Usually each kit comes with enough barrels and seals to service one whole SCV

Sir, Along with resealing the couplers with a seal kit, replace the springs and keepers on the outlet control levers. These are the levers that you spoke of. The springs on the outlet levers is what holds the lever in the latched position. In addition to the springs also add latch kit/plate to bottom of SCV outlets if it does not already have them. The latch plate is held on the bottom side of outlet casting by the same bolt that is used to retain the dust covers. The original lever stop iron/bracket is replaced with new latch plate and will give a better area/contact surface for lever to latch behind when lever is turned to hold hoses. Good Luck, DW

If I had a male tip that popped out of the breakaway coupler I just took a screwdriver and bent the retaining clip(parts key #30) down a little that WTW referred to.

Look at the ring of balls that lock the hose in, some of them may be damaged. When you order the breakaway coupler seal kit get a new set on locking balls.

I have seen some where the "barrel" #15 is also broken so you might want to check before going to parts store. When I worked for a dealer we overhauled quite a few of these. Betting that little snap ring and spring back on lever can be fun. Especially if your fingers are too big. Change all seals so you only have to do it once.

There is a lot more to rebuilding the couplers than meets the eye, and some of those things have been mentioned here. I have been working on some pictures and ways to have better success re-sealing the couplers, one includes a different barrel,or sleeve seal/backing ring, the spring and latch are important as mentioned, and also re-shaping the rear end of the sleeve, over time this area gets smacked with every from a hammer to a hitch pin to get it to move rearward so a hose can be installed, this makes a sharp over sized end that needs smoothed down so it don"t cut the new seals as it is pushed back into place.I plan on submitting these ideas and pictures to Green Magazine soon, although it may not coincide with the article they had about this a few months ago.. Deere couplers have a lot to be desired, and a lot of them are leaking as we speak,,Deere tried to fix the problem by trying to catch and send the "leak" back to sump, or even on to the ground via a drain line. I have came up with a quad ring that has 2 sealing surfaces on the inner surface, along with a solid backing ring, these work much better. One problem that happens when going back together is the end of the spiral backing ring ends up lipping over the o-ring, this lets oil flow over and past a good o-ring, the solid backing ring that I use keeps this from happening. I will post some pics and more of my thoughts latter to share with some of the ideas that others have mention on here.
