620 tranmission fluid

Just drain 2 1/2 gallons of water from rear end and transmission.
Can the new transmission fluid (like hyguard, or or thinner tractor transmission fluids be used in these older tractors?
If not, why not?
Climate gets cold here in northern wisconsin.

The seals on older tractors will some times seap with the lighter oils.
Biggest thing about using the right oil is that the lubrication of these transmissions and rearends is designed for the oil to carry up through the gear teeth to the upper shafts and bearings. A lighter oil will not carry up through the gear driveline to lubricate everything.

I drain the water out of mine every spring and fall if they aren't used. Just loosen the drain plug till it almost falls out and let the water drain till it turns to oil. Don't forget to drain the sidecover also. That one seems to get it the worst. There usually is some in the axle housing also. Saves on the oil if you stay ahead of it.

Yes, I understand that the lower gears fling the gear lube up to upper gears, dont you think that the light fluid would fling better when cold?
Then in warm weather I think that it still would fling all over.

It dont 'fling' up there, things turn farthe too slow for that. it needs to be carried on the gear teeth to the top & then runs down onto bearings etc. The newer machines use oil pumps to get the oil up there.
I still think it would be fine with newer style oil though.

I use the 85-140 in my 620 all year round here in nothern Illinois. You leave your tractor outside much? Rain water has a tendency to find its way in thru trans gear shift and around quadrand if it has a bad gasket

I understand that tractors werent used in the winter as much as the summer. But at 0 degrees 140 weight oil can't be fling around in there much, espcally if the gears arn't moving very fast.

What gear lube weight will work good and still be able to move the shifter, without blowing a nut.
winters temps get down to -30

I run 5w-50 synthetic in the engine & half 90w gear lube/half hytran in the tranny on my 41 A, hand cranks at -30 &the shifts decent. You just cant have any water in there.

Didn't the owners manuals say something about draining some out and adding in some kerosene for cold temps ?
