4020 keeps breaking gear off starter

Its a 4020 Diesel, 24v system. The gear on the end of the starter keeps breaking. The starter quit working, so I took it to the local starter repair place in town, they rebuilt it and put a new gear on the end. The original gear was fine. I only had it a week, and the gear broke off, they put a new one on at no cost. That one lasted a week and a half, same thing happened. Took it back, they said the armature was bent, so they replaced it and put another new gear on it, cost $180. That was about about 2 weeks ago, and this morning the gear broke off again.
What is my problem? Is something wrong with the flywheel?

Hi Just a thought I wonder if the guys have set the travel of the solenoid engage arm on the drive too short, and it hammers the drive against the back of the starter nose and breaks it off as the soleniod pulls it to far in. Some starters have adjustment for it. I have seen a few different ones do this in my time. my book doesn't show much on JD starters though. So might be a bit of a guess on this one.
Regards Robert

Go back and get your money from the rebuilder and go and buy one from Deere. I had problems with a drive also from a rebuilder after the third one he wouldn't replace them. Said they never had any problems. BS Then a few months later they finally admitted to have a bad batch of them. No kidding. chris

Did you inspect the ring gear before you installed the starter?

Have you been using ether to start it?

Yes I did, it looked pretty good. There was a few very very small nicks in a few places, but I wouldn't think enough to bother anything.
No, haven't used either.

I'd count the teeth on the gear, but only have one of the two pieces.

I need to put a clutch in it soon, maybe I'll put a new flywheel on it too.

Keep in mind that the tooth count is different between gas and diesel flywheels, wondering if you starter guy is on the right page...

But the drives are quite a bit different, armature shaft is half the size. chris

FYI; I put a diesel starter that was converter to 12 volts on our GAS 4020 by just switching the drive. I think the armature shaft was larger back where the bushing goes but was not where the drive sets. Only reason I even tried this was because I had these parts laying around and didn't cost me anything.

Thanks, the ones I've seen are quite a bit different, I was fighting a late 4020 LP once and couldn't find much to work with. chris

Our 4020 gas is an early one 1965 ? and that 24 volt starter came off a early jd500 TLB (3020)tried the starter conversion on the 500 and I didn't like it. Didn't seem to turn over very good ? so I got a late 4020 D 12 volt starter for it.

IIRC the diesel starter gear has 10 teeth
