The 6076 engine had a 33 percent torque rise, a higher top ring placement on the pistons, dome shaped combustion chamber in the cylinder head, 7 hole injection nozzles, whereas I think the 466 had 6 holes in the nozzles. There are also noticeable differences in the casting of the engine block, too. I believe the injection pump has an electronically controlled governor on the 6076 and the lack of the aneroid valve. The 6076 does not seem to be nearly as difficult to start in colder weather conditions, and the sound of the engine is quite different, as the engine has a more noticeable and sharper firing/ignition, which I think comes from a little higher compression ratio and the fuel injection system. The 466 in the 50 series, when running sounds like the 466 from the 40 series, whereas the 6076 sounds like the 6081, and I do hesitate to say this, but it does also sound more like the 8.3 liter cummins when running, as compared to the sound generated by the prior Deere models. I think bigger wrist pins as well. The gear drive waterpump is better and more durable but can get water into the oil. both are rock solid engines.Paul [Reply]  [No Email]

I have compared a 4450 to a 4455 and I noticed that the 4450 has an aneroid and the 4455 doesnt. The 55 has a sensor going to the intake manifold . Is the 6076 electronic injection ? Which water pump drive do you think was better ? What kind of water pump drive is in the 8.1L that replaced the 466 ? [Reply]  [No Email]

I'm an old timer and they're some "young guns" on this forum that are more up to date than I am. I can tell you for sure my 4255 isn't electronically fuel controlled but it is very good on fuel usage. It has 10,500+ hrs on it without an OH and will rd bale hay using a little over 3 GPH of fuel. My 4255 will crank in freezing weather without the aid of ether or coolant heater(no electricity in the tractor shed). I've owned the 4255 for 20 yrs. I just put the second waterpump on my 4255 @ 10,125 hrs I know the 55 series with the 6076 engines are some of the best tractors to have the JD logo put on them!!!!!!! [Reply]  [No Email]
