I plant soybeans with a 8640 and the factory lights just do not cut it while running a no till drill at night , in corn stubble . I want to add more lights and want to do it right . I would like some opinions on how I should do this , what circuits should I wire into? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think using a separate switch with a relay is the better way of adding lights, this would mean mounting a good relay with a hot wire going to it then a switch to trigger the relay, then the relay out wire (or work) would go to the lights. Mount the new lights in a way that they will not shine on the windows.

Can't say which units will suit you best, however, there are some SERIOUS LED light units you should look at (Google is your friend). A Pal of mine is a commercial fisher and just bought a pair of "turns nite into day" LED units, not cheap because of the marine influence, but 'Ole Schmidt'! they are BRIGHT !. HTH

This might be an expensive solution...but I would recommend looking at some of the better LED lamps available. If you have ever operated HID lights and noticed the improvement over standard halogens, I can tell you that the good LEDs are an order of magnitude better than the HID's. It's totally unbelievable until you see them in action. If you go the route of adding on more halogen or HID lights, watch your available power on the alternator, especially if you have a more modern drill with electrical parts.

RE340681 is the hood lamp that should work on a 50-series, but check with the dealer.

TIM S , do you think I should wire parallel with the original lights circuit , or just wire a new circuit ?

I would go with a new circuit pulling to much extra from the light switch will cause trouble

On all my tractors I add four lights up front, all wired on a separate circuit coming from the starter. I use a 50 amp breaker sending current to a 50 amp toggle switch with heavy wire going to a relay. This sends the current to the front lights (also drawn from the starter). The lights up front are two 4509 aircraft landing lights (spotlights) in the center and round halogen lights pointing outward to the next swath. When properly aimed you can see a marker track across a quarter mile field easily. I did this on one tractor years ago and it worked so well I've done it on two more. They are mounted right above the front weights so the light pattern is flat. This setup works very well and doesn't break the bank, either. Mike

Like what was said, LED's are white and bright and they don't draw near the amps. Put some extra LED's on your tractor and the the rest of the lights will look yellow. Deere carries LED's that are very good quality but you pay dearly for quality. A neighbor was going to put all LED replacement lights on his Deere and when his wife found out what it was going to cost she put her foot down. Does the 40 series have that worthless light strip in the front of the hood or did that start with the 50 series. If your tractor does have that light strip, Deere carries a replacement LED strip now. I put the LED strip on a 4650 and the light it gives off is like daylight. It doesn't shine out across the field but it illuminates the area in front of the tractor like daylight. Jim

the 8640 only has two circular lights in the front , the 8650 has a sort of strip with 4 circular lights with in it . I think most of the 55 series has the light strip . I will roughly cost around $700 to replace the lights with LED.
