I've had good success placing wood stove door sealing rope around the installed exhaust pipe before I place the muffler over it. The muffler's bottom flange has a recess that holds the rope well. Bolting the muffler down on the rope seal reduces the smoke that escapes that dirtys things under the hood.

Makes quite a difference on the on the 70D! Mostly from smoke headed back down 'round the OD of the pipe in the casting. Often wondered if it might make a noticeable difference if I had a weather break but I sit out in the open on all mine.
