John Deere 5010 Power Output Questions

Hello guys, I have recently rebuilt the 531 diesel engine in my 63 5010 and was wondering how much more power I could get out of it. The crank was ground, new connecting rods, and bearings, rebuilt head, new injection nozzles etc etc. I was just wondering what would be a safe horsepower range before I would start to have problems, obviously I don't want to take any chances because the rebuild was not cheap. I really like these tractors but I do want to get some more power out of mine because they seem to be lacking a little. Any insight would be greatly welcomed!

As per tractor data on the internet PTO HP was 121 PTO HP. Think I have read 123 HP in other places. There was a little tolerance at the factory, some probably left at a little more power.

Use my numbers as a starting point, not a bible. There were not many of these tractors sold in the area where I grew up, I don't know how much or successful turning them up was.

my rule of thumb is not over 10% more as thats about all the cooling will handle any higer and you will waste fuel and shorten the engine life

Allright that makes pretty good sense with the 10% number because I did hear that these do have problems with cooling if it is very hot outside. i was planning on turning the pump up a little just to give it a little more grunt, but I wont know how much HP I will gain until i put it on my Dino.

A tractor jockey once said he thought the 5010 held the
worlds record for tossing rods through the block. I'd stick
with stock. If you need more Hp buy more tractor.

I also heard they have transmission problems, but I really dont believe that too much. My 5010 has 9500 hours on it and my 5020 has just turned over to 9000 hours still with the original blocks, and the original transmissions and I do not baby them by any means. I was just looking for suggestions for a little more power because the 5010 was retired and restored.

My 5010 is serial number #1229, which makes it the 229 5010 built, and for the first year they came out with lighter transmission cases.

I don't think there is much hope for getting more hp out of a 5010 because they are naturally aspirated. Its not like a IH 1256 were you can just turn the screw up more.

Is your 5010 engine actually a real original 5010 or has it been upgraded to a 5020? Does your 5010 have the 12 qt oil pan or the bigger 5020 oil pan?

Add the M&W turbo kit? Was one advertised on here a week or so ago, complete kit, all for a thousand bucks.

It has the original 12 qt oil pan on it. I agree it has certain limits because of being naturally aspirated....
