440 Crawler

I am looking at a JD 440 Crawler (GM 2cyl) but one of the tracks will not stay on the rollers. It is not where I can get it on hard dry ground to look. What is most likely the problem with the track/rollers/???

They are either completely wore out or need adjusted. On the bottom rail there should be two 1-1/4 nuts on the outside and inside. You have to tighten them the same. So ten turns on inside you need ten turns on outside. On my 420c the book says lay a 2x4 across the top of the track and when its at the right tightness from the center of the 2x4 down to the track should be 1-1/2 or 2 inches in the middle something like that I would have to look it up. It could also just be that the tracks are completely shot? Mine are not great however I have room to tighten and mine is a play toy. Finding new tracks or 50% used one is a big expense. You can also try jdcrawlers.com Levoy own the site and sells parts. There is also a forum with guys that know a lot about crawlers. I have the book and can look up your info when I am in the shop on Friday if you need me too. Hope this helps...

Either the chains and rollers are worn past 100% and/or not adjusted properly. If they are too loose, the will slip off.
It is a 440 ICD (Industrial Crawler Diesel).

A sweet but expensive mistress to maintain.
What about sprockets, front idler track wheel and the small upper and lower rollers?
There maybe enough clearance gained with new fronts, new sprockets and 12 new idlers to run the worn tracks for quit some time.
Steering clutches need to be inspected too.
Use a coolant heater instead of ether on the 2-53 Detroit. The originonal S series 53's did not start worth beans at below 50F.
There are piston, injector, blower and valve train spring updates from Detroit for N series specs. Wouldn't know it was the same engine with the improvements.
