700 Grinder Mixers

My dad has always told me that the 700 Grinder/Mixers were junk comparted to the 400. We need a grinder/mixer and I've found some 700s but he says we need the 400. Are the 700s actually junk or why are they not as desired as the 400s?

We have been working the crapp out of a 750 with a hay mill on it, for the last 25 years,, they are much better than a 400, the flat bottom won't plug like the 400 style do where the cone and the vertical auger come together. Much heaveyer drives and capacity's..

We owned 2 New Holland machines, a 340 from 1965 and traded for a 355 with Hydraulic augers -both were great machines in completely dry feed as they all are - we picked corn for the cows -and when you ran out of dry corn in the fall and ground corn directly from the field at 20 - 27 percent moisture the mix would stick and bridge in the hopper -I always wanted a 750 with flat bottom - I am sure it would have worked much better

I worked at Deere des Moines works when they built the grinder mixers there. The 700 was considered a much better machine.they refered to it as the 700 Cadillac.

I had a lot of trouble with the gears down under that plate on the left hand front of mine. There's a slip clutch in there, then a pair of gears, taper bearings on the shaft, another pair of gears in a sealed box. Just seemed like a whole bunch more moving parts than they needed to have. The parts manager at the dealer gave me way too much attitude when I wanted parts for it too.
It's got melted down a year and a half ago.

A lot of the parts are unavailable for them,we buy one for parts now and then, and make what we can't come up with. We only feed 1 batch of steers a year now about 250 head during the fall/winter months, we start them on stuffers grinding a large amount of dry common hay in with a little corn to get them filled up with out foundering, this mixture would plug a conventional mixer, plus the hay mill makes the grinding process much better.
