john deere 50 transmission noise

I have a 1953 john deere 50, it makes an awful noise in third gear and faintly heard in first gear. Since first and third gears are the same shaft, could I possibly have a bearing out on the end of this shaft?

There is a bearing on the top shaft where it fits into the input shaft. This is where the hi lo split takes place. Worth taking the top cover off and looking around. You can with a pry bar manually shift everything into neutral and spin the shaft listen for roughness and see if it wiggles around from bad bearings. You can also rotate the gears around looking for broken teeth.
