I have two, 1970 4020s. One has an air cleaner that comes out of the hood and the other doesn't. The one with tha air cleaner out is serial number 222372. IS there a reason for the difference in the air cleaners, or is something wrong???

I believe the external air cleaner was just an option. I have a 72 3020 with external air cleaner but have also seen some that the intake is under the hood. Maybe someone else has a better answer.

I concur; it’s my understanding that it was an option when ordering. I’ve also been told that the under hood parts are not the same. There a 4 variations of parts oil bath with and without precleaner and dry element with or without. Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, I was told this when I wanted to change my 4020 oil bath with precleaner to a dry element. A John Deere mechanic told me it was doable.

For a 4020 diesel SN<200,999 I saw two(2) air cleaner canisters listed. Dry type was introduced @ SN 119,000. The way I understand the parts catalog was the same precleaner was utilized for oil or dry air cleaner.

AR46151 dry type

For 4020 SN >201,00 with precleaner
AR46149 AIR CLEANER 1 (A)GASOLINE
AR46150 AIR CLEANER 1 (B)LP-GAS (SUB AR46175 AND 15H21)
AR46151 AIR CLEANER 1 (C)DIESEL (SUB AR46176 AND 15H21)

SN>250001 without precleaner
AR51923

I have both 4000 and 4020 late models without precleaner. Both have exact same components underhood. I have seen some with the precleaner and assumed it was an option. I guess I don't have an answer. Personally I like them without, think they look cleaner and more modern.

Both of your tractors have a filter element(parts key #2) that older tractors didn't have. The precleaner pipe(AR78485) is the same for early & late model 4020's. Parts key #2 AR51923 CLEANER SAFETY AIR /PARTS/ ADD 130.44 USD For $130.44 I'd rather have the precleaner above the hood. In fact on my 4255 I have a Turbo ll precleaner that has a fan in it to help pull out some dust prior to air entering air cleaner.

Hey Tx Jim I agree down in that dusty Texas air I bet you
need it. These old tractors are just toys for me now. My new
ones have far superior filter systems on them though. I am
amazed at the technology on the new machines. Kind of
hard to keep up, changes fast.

The 69 and 70 models did not have the the #2 element in the parts picture. Deere added this in 71 an72 with the new block assembly
