If it can "over travel" that might explain why it didn't seem to seat as far down on the re-install. I couldn't see down in the hole with the foot rest in the way but could move the ball around with my finger and didn't feel an indentation for it to sit down in. I'll try and jam my cell phone camera in there this morning to figure it out.

How would I return the ball seat back to it's proper spot to re-install the ball/spring without possibly causing an issue?

IIRC there are only 4 bolts that hold footrest on the tractor. I think I would remove footrest for a better view.

It'd be far easier and I probably should but I'd have to cut them off with a torch and then find replacements. I'd hoped that I wouldn't need to get that far into it but may have to if a new detent spring isn't the answer (see post and pics in response below)

You can view parts schematic at I would download a parts photo of it for you if I could get my "new to me Windows 7 pro" to cooperate
