i have a 1959 440i with bucket and backhoe. i have a couple problems. first , it has a new carb on it but only seems to run on full choke. i can drive it around and runs great,just on full choke. if i take the choke off, it idles down and stalls. 2nd, the hydraulics are really slow. it has a rebuilt pump, new lines and fluid. the bucket will go up if someone lifts up on it while you pull the handle , the backhoe swings side to side and extends but slow. to me, it acts like its low on fluid or a weak pump. how do you know if there is enough fluid?

The proper carb? The late 440 gassers had a souped up engine with a larger carb.
Where and how have you been adjusting the carb screws?
Fuel flow to the carb bowl from the tank and filter?
Have you tested hydraulic pressure and flow to verify if the pump is the problem? Or if lines, valves or hydraulic rams are the problem?

the carb was new by the previous owner, i dont know if or how he adjusted it. the flow seems to be good, bowl is always full and if gas is on while tractor is not running, it will keep flowing. how do i test hydraulic pressure? the previous owner seems to think there is blockage from a silicon seal he put on, but i wouldnt think it would affect the whole system, i would think it would be centralized to say just the bucket or just the backhoe, not the bucket,backhoe,braces, etc.... the whole system is slow. thanks for the information

The very first step to solving your hydraulic problem is to test both the pressure and gallons per minute. Have you checked your filter?

I had a similar issue with my 440 Backhoe. Mine ended up being the pressure relief valve was stuck in the partially open postion from dirt and not allowing enough hydraulic pressure to build to operate correctly. Follow the pressure line out of the pump and there is junction box of sorts on the right side for the hyrdaulic lines. The large hexagonal head on the side is actually the relief valve. Loosen it and remove (you will need to catch the hydraulic fluid) and inspect for dirt. Also, do not bypass this valve and try to operate without it, even temporarily....bad things happen...don't ask how i know.

With a pressure gauge.
There is even a picture in the service manual and maybe even in the operator's manual.
Don't waste your time and money on an IT manual. They contain just enough info to get into trouble.
Call 1-800-522-7448
1060 psi and 8.4gpm at fast idle.
