John Deere A 1950 (6 Speed)

Our Agriculture Class in rebuilding a 1950 John Deere A. When re-installing the crankshaft and the camshaft we noticed no marks on the crankshaft gear when viewed from the left side of the tractor. We did notice a mark on the camshaft. How does on set the correct valve timing without the proper marks on the crank gear and camshaft?
We also noticed a mark on the backside of the crankshaft gear when viewed from the right side of the tractor. We also observed a mark on the back side of the camshaft gear when viewed from the right side of the tractor. Surely these are not the marks that should be aligned?
The I&T manual does not give a clear description on how to do this!
Thanks for any help.

Dale' The marks on the gears when viewed from the belt pully side are the marks you use. I have done several and they are all running. Put some white paint on the marks so they are easyer to see, there are two cogs marked one gear and one on the other, this should time the camshaft. hope this helps. __________Harold

Yes, the marks are on the backside or the crank to cam gear. There will be marks on the outside of the cam gear that align with the gov. gear.

Harold, thanks for the reply. An additional question. Must the marks as viewed from the clutch side be lined at the same time with the camshaft and governor gear to the flywheel side?
If find it difficult to match marks on each side of the cam gear at the same time.
Thanks for your help.
