2 cylinder power steering Q JD 60?

Question for those of you with 2 cylinder power steering experience:I have my 60 radiator assembly out of the tractor that allows me free access to the steering valve actuating sleeve and oil seal housing. It appears that I can unbolt the oil seal housing and simply slide it off the actuating sleeve without disturbing the rest of the power steering mechanism or valve housing and leave all of that still bolted to the pedistal. I noticed that the oil sleeve housing is a little wet with oil and I would like to simply replace this oil seal PN AF1934 and the gasket PN 21062 between the oil seal housing and the steering worm housing without disturbing the rest of the power steering system and all the taboos that go with it. Would I be safe with this simple repair, or would I be upsetting the apple cart with the power steering system as a whole? I really dont want to get into the power steering system as it has been working just fine other than this dampness of oil around the housing. I think the seal is just wearing out. Your opinions please!! PS service manual calls out for removing all of this along with the valve housing then performing an end play check. I dont want to get into all that right now.
 
That oil seal housing will slide right off without disturbing any adjustments. There is the oil seal around the actuating sleeve and a gasket a the base.

I know how you feel. Knowing that your PS is working well would make me just want to go after the leak and try to disturb the rest of the unit as little as possible.

I have been try to get the incentive to start on my PS on my 60 std. Will have to put on a new radiator core as well.

My tractor does not have PS originally, will have to install this one from another 60.
 
Looks like you have everything you need. I would suggest trying to replace most of the seals unless the machine will sit out in a barn. I don't think it would be too bad, just time. Power steering makes a world of difference on these old machines if your going to use them for anything more than a parade queen. Are you going to mate up the governor gear with that used one?
 
Fred: I"ve been into these many times...sounds like you"re unsure and maybe got some swimmers cold feet. It"s better to be cautious, however with the housing as it...it appears the lower bolt will be hard to extract. Taking whole unit off would be my suggestion, however I"ve been there many times. I doubt you would have to worry with reshimming, if you can measure and use the same gaskets...you would however need to adjust center the valve. The best way is to jack up tractor and move tap the houseis back and forth till you get it centered. I believe you could replace the other section without adjustment. I can say disturbing a system is touchy and when working on 50 year old wear the best I was able to accomplish was centering out the wear. Those steering parts are getting very scarce. There is a lot more tuneup of the ps that you can do but there is a learning curve. Old timers showed me some tricks and would be good if you had someone locally that could give you on site pointers. The end play is set on the other end, Fred. If you only remove the seal housing, you won't disturb anything. It will slide off over the actuating sleeve. There is a single gasket on the base, no shimming.
