JD B - What is this part?

I have a JD B and ordered the manuel from this site however I still got some questions. 1. Above the part labeled OIL LEVEL TEST COCK is another part that sticks out and looks like you turn it, whats it for? 2. Exactly what is the FIRST REDUCTION GEAR COVER FILLER & DRAIN used for? is it open to the rest of the motor oil or what? 3. My tractor has a distributor and some hoses from the lift in the back go into something and the something has a little roll pin hickie thats turns, what does that do??? the manuel I bought only shows magnetos so I am at atotal loss on this.
 
the thing on top of oil check cock is oil psi auj if oil psi is between m & h live it a lone you can drain the frist red. cover when you change oil and add one qt to the cover i think the thing you are talking about is a live hyd pump if it ie mounted between the gov and the dist. it is a live pump the little pin rotats to turn the pump on turn on only when engine is stoped
 
I think Kent has it right if I can decipher his horrible spelling and grammar. Not all Bs had the drain plug in the first reduction gear cover, only the later ones.
 
1. The item above the oil test cock is an ajustment for engine oil pressure.
2. The first reduction gear cover would collect condensation in humid conditions... drain the oil/water out of the drain plug and replace with a pint oil.
3. The thing with the hoses behind the distributor with the roll pin hickey is an aftermarket Live Hydraulic system powered by the governor.
 
may not spell very but know how to fix them and what they are by the way that is not after market pump they were made by deere
 

I am sure most here get ticked when some uppity City Boy wants to correct the grammar of an innocent person who is the Salt of the Earth...

They "just don't get it"...

But, the rest of us understand..NOT ALL School Systems were (or are) equal...

Don't worry much about grammar, what matters is knowing about the topic. If Kent is like me, he didn't learn to type and is self taught. Makes for some "fat fingers" when typing responses. Some of us were not taught to use computers in the first grade.
 
"do all powertrols have the pump between the distributor?" ---- No, all powr-trols on A,B,&G tractors came from the factory with a pto driven pump located just in front of the pto seal housing. The pto had to be engaged to use the rockshaft or hydraulics. The governor driven "live" pump was developed for 50,60,&70 tractors. It could also be retrofitted on A,B,&G tractors.

how can I tell if the pump is turned on or off?" ---- The "little rollpin hickie that turns" is what turns the pump on and off. Look next to it and you'll see On and Off marks cast into the pump. ALWAYS turn the pump on BEFORE you start the tractor.
 
Pete the 50,60 and 70 pumps do not fit on the A B &G they drive off an extra gear that engages the cam gear on the left side of the gov. A B and G fit between the gov. and the Mag or Dist.
 
Yes, but the live hydraulic pump was a Deere aftermarket kit. Both of our B's had one installed by the dealership after my granddad bought 274881 in 1950, and after my dad bought 308885 in 1952. There is no mention of it in the owner's manual or in SM2004, the dealer service manual dated 1948, but a breakdown of "Live Hydraulic Pump Kit" is shown in the PC-330 parts manual on page 112. They were not installed at the factory.
