What size turbo?

How do you determine what size/model type turbo to put on a tractor? Given that it's an after-market gone bad, no turbo and you want to add one, or you want something to deliver more air to match increased fuel?

(quoted from post at 12:15:27 12/07/12) How do you determine what size/model type turbo to put on a tractor? Given that it's an after-market gone bad, no turbo and you want to add one, or you want something to deliver more air to match increased fuel?

First, you need to determine the air flow (CFM) of your tractor's engine. This is determined by the engine displacement, RPM and volumeric efficiency.

Second, the tubocharger is then sized to supply that CFM at the pressure increase you desire. Note, the air flow volume does not increase, only the weight flow due to the increased air density resulting from the pressure increase. The tubocharger is sized from compressor maps supplied by the manufacturer.

Third, to get started I would suggest you purchase a book on turbochargers. HPBooks is one source, for a step by step explaination I would recommend; Turbochargers, by Hugh MacInnes.

Talk to your friendly local turbo dealer's tech line. They know turbos.
Housing size on the compressor, compressor wheel size, exhaust AR ratio and turbine wheel trim all matter.

Jugs- are you looking to replace your M&W (Ray Jay actually) on that 5020? If you are drop me a line I have one for sure- possibly two places you can call- I KNOW the one place will either have a turbo on the shelf or can have you one built and shipped out in a couple days. They have been replacing the 4010/20 style with a air research- not 100% sure what they would do on the 5020.

Look on ebay under rajay turbo. M&W 20E 102 turbos are nothing special they where used on 4020.4230,806.856 to name a few a 5020 turbo is a E flow turbo as long as your exhaust housing is good to go you should be fine with any E flow. The ones up for auction will sometimes have a funky looking exhaust housing, however, the turbo will be the same you may need to rotate the compression housing some which is no big deal. Also most every rajay tubo will have an on center exhaust housing the 5020 uses an off set.
The best part is sometimes the're very cheap.
