i have an R that had a stuck motor. i took it off the tractor and set it on blocks so the cylinders were facing the sky. filled them with water and baking soda and put the negative cable of the battery charger on the block and suspended a piece of metal into the water and hooked the positive cable to it. after three days of electrolysis the pistons pounded out with a 12 lb sledge hammer and the cylinder walls were like new. don"t under estimate what a little voltage can do. i"ve never tried this method to unstick pistons before but it worked great. now i just have to find a gasket set to put it all back together. any suggestions other than a john deere dealer? thanks!

Make sure you hone those cylinders. Check end gap on rings too. Good luck. As for gaskets ...Google or ebay.

You can make the gaskets for the block to case and your rocker cover. Cork for the rocker cover and the harder gasket sheet for the case. Summit has sheets available large enough to make one. Or if you have some tight... non corrugated cardboard that'll work too. Just check that your pistons don't come out past the block surface by more than a few thousandths after bolting the block on. Thinner gasket = higher piston... = little more compression.

I have a new R head gasket I didn't use listed on eBay right now that has a bid. As it is it's about 30 less than from mother Deere. Don't know what the other guy bid though? Thinking Deere wants 110-ish but don't think you have to pay shipping from them?

Like Husker44A said... Be a good idea to hone and really be nice to get new rings and gap them. At least the compression rings anyway. Oil rings would probably be fine and they cost a lot more aftermarket anyway.

Great idea for loosening them up. Never considered that. Used diesel juice soaking on the R I used to have... when it started to leak out I took a piece of locust and a hammer to them.

I use electrolysis a lot, and while it is pretty neat, it's tough to get any work to occur down around a piston, as the process is very much line of sight. You probably had the most effect from the water being softened by the baking soda so it penetrated.
