John Deere A hydraulics and PTO seal

Hello everyone! I am looking for some advice and guidance on my 1946 John deere model A's hydraulic system. I have a leak that is coming from the shroud around the PTO shaft. I plan to take it apart and replace what I believe is a shot PTO shaft oil seal, but I havent had it apart yet. Does this sound like a potential problem? It seems to just seep a little oil. Also last time I changed the hydraulic oil, it only took 5 gallons, not the 9 the book says. It has a power-trol, so does the fill spout need to be the one on the power-trol or the fill spout located on the axel housing? Thanks for all your help!

The power trol only holds five quarts. The filler is on the unit itself. The trans and rear end hold seven gal per my book. Now, there are two drain plugs, one for the trans and one for the rear end. Did you remove both? Dont put 80/90 in the power trol, use 10 w motor oil or 30 w is fine too.

I have a question about the hydraulic oil. The manual for my 1945 model A says it takes 8 gallons.I recently drained out the old hydraulic oil and attempted to put in 8 gallons.I know it won't hold 8 gallons as it started running out the fill hole when I removed the funnel I used to refill.I figure I had between 6 and 7 gallons in when I removed the funnel.I relly don't believe it takes much more than 5 gallons of hydraulic oil.I know I didn't drain out 8 gallons, but I also know it was low before I started the process. ray

First off, that's not the capacity for the "hydraulic" reservoir. That's more like 5 or 6 quarts in the Powr-Lift or a later Powr-Trol.

You're talking about the rear end oil, and the FSB I just looked at says 8 gallons, and should be gear oil. Is there a second drain plug for the rear end that drops the oil trapped over the hump in the forward transmission area? I can't remember for sure.

(quoted from post at 19:33:53 12/02/12) Yes there is another plug. Right in front of drawbar. My op manual says 7 gal. . .its a toss up I guess!

Later models held a bit less because they lost space when they put the starter underneath at 584,000...in case that matters. Not sure of everyone's serial numbers.
