70 axle seal

trying to download jdparts.com. its not working for some reason. my axle seal on my 70 is leaking, do i have to pull wheel center off to replace it?

Not really. The axle seal is located at the INSIDE end of the axle, so you go in through the back, remove the bull gear and replace seal. Now, if you have the axle housing filled with a lot of oil, it will continue to drip unless you mop that oil out of there because the "seal" on the outer end is just a felt meant to keep dust out of the greased bearing. Some folks dril a hole through the lower inner axle housing stud to make a drip point to clear the housing, then put the stud back in to seal it again. Never tried that myself, just mopped out the housing.
 
Not sure about the 70 but on this G I am working on there is a spot behind the seal that forms a cavity and it holds some of the trans. grease if it leaks past the seal. Once that cavity fills up it works it's way towards the outside bearing and leaks. On the G if you remove the bolt as in the picture it will drain this cavity. No need to drill and tap the axle housing.
