Early '39 B - Lubrication System Question

'39 B (early)- hand start. Not fully re-assembled. Put oil in crankcase to check oil moving through system. Turned flywheel by hand to check. After a good number of turns, oil is coming out of the bore for the oil pressure guage (small bore at top of 1st photo), and main bearings.etc. Oil is also covering the gears, etc. in the interior of the governor. (seen by lighted mirror) BUT I have not been able to get oil to come out the tappet oiler pipe bore (lower opening in 2nd photo). I think that the oil pump will have to be turning faster with the enginge running before oil can work it's way out of the bore, into the pipe and on to the tappets. Is my thinking correct?

there is not much pressure there. On my G it just kinda slowly flows out when running. They dont need much. When you get it running, take the pipe off and you will see what I am talking about.

There is just a drip tray in the gov. housing that catches oil splashing around, and then just drip down to the rockers. You won't see any oil out that hole right now.

Look inside the governor housing and you will see a trough which catches oil when operating. It's a gravity type flow down the pipe to oil the tappets. Be sure all the openings are clear and the pipe clean. Also when installing the pipe from the governor to the tappet cover, be sure it's all downhill from governor to tappet cover. Pretty simple system but doesn't work to good unless kept very clean.Hope this helps. Frank

Thanks guys. It confirms what I thought -- that I won't see any oil coming out of the tappet pipe bore in the governor until the tractor is running. Ken
