I have being seeing some 37 model A's on Ebay.I have a 37 A and the John Deere letters on mine is big letters.My freind has a 38 A with small letters on his. The 37 A's on ebay has small letters on them.Did they change sometime in 37? I dont have my sn handy but it has been checked and is a 37.It might be a early 37 with leftover 36 parts.When i let the brake locks down it will touch the tops of the letters. Anyone have any ideas?

At serial #460000(sometime in later '37), there were some changes. The number of splines on the axle increased, a boss to mount cultivators was added to the front pedestal, a clip was added to keep the shutter control rod from vibrating, and the "bucket" seat instead of the flat 24 hole one was used. I don't know about the change in the size of the lettering on the rear axle--it might be possible. I've never compared them.

Rear Axle Housings and axles shafts were both changed in mid year 1937 models. 10 spline axles went to twelve spline. Around serial number 466,000 The front steering pedistol was also changed at this time also. These tractors can easily picked out from a glance The steering post has a clamp ring groove collar cast into it like a G had for a culitvator mounting clamp.

As the others have said, the changes were made at serial number 460000 (early July 37). The earlier axle housing (A828R) had larger lettering and the style was san-sarif. After 460000 the casting number was changed to A1866R and the style was with sarifs. The axles went to twelve spline. The steering pedestal got the upper saddle added, and there were some other changes like the seat. The axle lettering and the pedestal are the most noticeable changes.

Thanks for the info.I was just wondering about them.I noticed a difference in the unstyled A's.I looked at mine and it has 10 spline and sn 458965 witch would be before the change.

Does anyone have any info on build date of my tractor?I know there was alot of 37s made and was wondering if it was a earlier 37 model.

With some information I've gathered over time and a little math I can tell you that your tractor was likely built about 6/16/37. You can obtain the detailed build and shipping info from Two-Cylinder Club for a fee of $35 plus $8 shipping. I understand the JD Pavilion in Moline now has a kiosk where you can obtain the same info.
If you don't mind sharing the info for my records I would be interested in the powerlift serial number (if your tractor has one) and the maincase heat code number. If original the powerlift would be somewhere in the area of PL-37600 and the heat code would likely be around 155-37. I can tell you where to find these numbers, if you're not sure.
I saw from some of your other posts that you live in NE Arkansas. What town are you close to? I didn't grow up there but I used to live in Piggott during all of the 1980's and my mother still lives there.

OOPS, just reread your post and realized you don't have a powerlift because the brake latches flop down to the axle housing.

Its a flat back.I live in Trumann thats about 15 miles south of Jonesboro.The tractor was my dads.It came from Joplin Mo.I got it when he passed and brought it to Arkansas.Im still trying to learn about these old tractors because im planing on keeping it in the family.I will look on the main case for those numbers.Thanks.

The heat code is 126-37.That number is in front of the pulley.Maybe thats the right one.
