John deere 60

looking at this tractor a row-crop JD 60 sn 6058127. It is a row crop with 3 pt. and power steering with some rear hydraulics, a tach. drive and rollomatic.
It has a cover plate on the top of the hood with the exhaust normally comes out. the exhaust comes out on the right hand side of engine,below the hood and along the engine to the back. is this an odd option? kinda like a orchard style???

Yes, a fairly rare. Pg. 15-15 of the parts book. Some folks liked them on loader tractors. I have one for my 70D, but I took it off a few years back to store it. Makes them sound a bit different.

The exhaust was optional, & not very many sold that way. Back in the fifties many barns were just too small for a tractor. The one we kept ours in was only about 4 inches above the exhaust. Get rid of the upright exhaust, & look at how high a barn roof could be to get one in. Also the low exhaust made working next to a fence line with trees hanging out safer. The problem comes in hay, or dry crops. I beleive the lower exhaust can start a fire especially if You have to stop, & let the tractor sit running, or not!

That type EXH, is very expe to maintain. New JD mufflers are no longer avail, plus they were much louder with the long tail pipe, not to mention the heat, smell and ear newsence when attaching implements that required the tractor to be running to help install.They were also very destructive on JD weather brakes if you were not very careful, the canvas would get burnt.Some farmers would forget to install the curved steel bracket supplied for clearance.

We have factory rear exhaust on out 630 std with the tail pipe exiting near the western swinging drawbar ,,,it sure makes the john deere sound different we have about 4200 hrs on the original muffler and had to replace the exhaust tail pipe once fairly rare..i agree kinda a fire hazard kinda like a catalytic converter on a pickup going thru a wheat field after combining we dont use for it for haying also.

I have a JD430 with down exhaust out the back. As mentioned is nice in low spaces or around trees, I have used it in hay with no fire problems. It is a little nasty to work behind it when hooking up equipment or running wood splitter.
