Unstyled B Questions

These may have been covered in previous topics. I'm sorry for asking again.
1. Is the Fairbanks RV2 magneto correct for a 1936 model?
2. Does an RV2 correct for a JD have the plug wires connect on the side when its mounted on the tractor, instead of on top?
Thanks for your help.

Not totally sure about correctness, but I think it is the right one. There are two "RV2" magnetos. RV2a was used on early model A tractors, wires come out the top. RV2b was used on both A & B tractors, wires come out the front side of the mag.

You might want to pick up a copy of the late great Duane Larson's compilation of the John Deere field service manuals. I think he has a page with all the mags for the B tractor by serial number. Well worth the price.

You should buy the CD by Duane Larson in the link above, it is chock full of good info.

Thanks! I have a DRV2B sn 185511. When i bolt it up to the drive flange, the mag lays to the right making the plug wires come out horizontal. Is this a right fit?

The DRV2B looks like this when mounted.

Note on DScott's info that the first 14037 B's used a different version of the DRV2B(AB210R) than the later ones(AB206R). The lag angle is different in them. BTW, ser# 14037 is in early '36, so check your ser# before you buy one.

Thanks DScott, that's how mine would look. I have a Wico X on it now. I have the DRV2B, and a Wico C. I have to choose which one to use. I like the look of the DRV2B better. Any thoughts??

Well, I like the DRV2B on my B as it is the correct one and it has always started and ran great once I got it properly installed.
The DRV2 mags are a different animal! I scratched my head trying to install my first one until the Mag Wizard, Duane Larson took the time to walk me thru it. The DRV2A and DRV2B are the same except the mag body is rotated 90 degrees on the B. Below are the instructions Duane gave me:

"Rotate flywheel until flywheel side piston is at top of compression stroke, and LH Impulse is then lined up with mark on transmission case and the magneto drive flange should be horizontal. Your magneto does the following: click(spark)-click(spark)-click(no spark)-click(no spark) and the pattern repeats. Hold your magneto in a vise like it will be mounted on the tractor, and run a plug wire from the bottom (forward on the B) HV outlet to a plug laying on the vise. Rotate your magneto until you get a spark at the plug, and stop immediately after the spark occurs. The drive flange should be close to horizontal and mate up with the driving flange on the end of the governor shaft. Bolt the magneto in place, and run the bottom plug wire to the flywheel side plug and the top wire to the pulley side plug. Then I would adjust the running timing (by rotating the magneto within the slots) with a timing light. There is no adjustment for the impulse (or starting) timing on the DRV2A. "
Hope this helps.
