Battery will not charge

I have a great running '57 John Deere 420U 6 volt system. Good power, great hydralics, and starts easly when battery is fully charge. However, it will not charge the battery. The amp meter will show a negative when lights are on but not a positive when off and engine running. The generator is rebuilt, the regulator has been checked and is okay and the amp meter has been checked. Any suggestions?

The shop that rebuilt they generator, showed me that it was performing well. Generating good current. Is there something else that needs to be done when reinstalled on the tractor?

Often times a genny repair shop may have the genny polarized at Neg ground but your tractor battery is at Pos ground in which case if you didnt correctly re polarize the genny you can damage the VR or relay big time.

Run through my Non Charging Troubleshooting Procedure for polarization and how to test the genny and Vr etc

I think John T might be on to it.

I remember my dad polarizing generators after he rebuilt them. I was too young to understand polarization, just remembered the sparking.

I will follow through with David's suggestion and let you know. It may take a couple of days to free up the shop. It is finally cold here in Wis

Thanks everyone.

Get the shop warmed up,,,,,,,Polarize (may have been reversed from your tractor at genny shop),,,,,,Then run my Troubleshooting Procedure especially Para 5 (Ground the Field) to see if its a Voltage Regulator (Or cutout rleay and light switch) verus a genny problem. Let us know
