I have recently purchased a JD 1070 with less than 800 hours on it. It is clean as a whistle having been kept in a barn and obviously used little. Any idea what kind of crankcase oil would be best for one of these diesels?

I really like the JD Plus 50 in my small diesels (855 and 4310). They allow you to extend the change interval, and that works out to a convenient single change per year at the hours I run, so if it is nice, clean, and tight, it should work fine. Rotella is a good choice as well.
