4230 Hyd. Pump?

My 4230 has developed a noise in the rear. I
changed the hydraulic fluid, filter, screen in the
spring when I did axle bearings and seals.. Screen
was completely clean, fluid was clean, opened
filter it was clean. Brakes were perfect on both
sides. I have used it about 150 hours since. When
it gets hot, hydraulic oil that is, I get a
rattle/knocking noise from under my feet/seat. It
doesnt matter if the clutch is pushed in/ or in
gear. This is a quad range. It shifts fine, works
in all gears. Hydraulics seem fine, steering okay,
3pt up and down fine, although it does settle
after an 1hr or so, but has done that along time.
I decided to pull the shaft for the trans pump. It
does has a touch of wear, but nothing I would
consider terrible. Is it possible for the pump to
rattle when the fluid gets hot. I looked on
JDparts.com and didnt really see anything in the
pump like a bushing that would do that. The noise
does change when I used hydraulic functions, gets
quiet when I lift up and implement. That is why I
am leaning towards a new pump and shaft. But on
the flip side dont want to waste my time. One
other strange thing that has developed now that is
is cooler at night. The pto will run for about 45-
60 seconds when I first start it. I check the
linkage and it is returned all the way, and
nothing is stuck under the rod. I bought this
tractor new and was planning on keeping it around
for misc use. But its starting to become a pita.
Thanks for any insight.

How many hours are on it?, The trans. pump is most likely worn if it"s original. I would start there, the replacement pump is a larger, better pump, about $850,,if it is worn it would take a moment or so to pick up oil and pressure up the operating valve, which would mean it would also take a moment or 2 for the PTO brake to take hold, this could be the reason for the PTO to run for a bit then stop.

Noise.........don't know if 4230s are the same, but on 4430s, there's a 'block' (about 2 inches square) on the right side in rear of the battery where 2 or 3 hydraulic lines come together; if the bolt holding it to the tractor fails, it will vibrate and make a noise somewhat as you've described. I disremember the name of the thing (CRS), but Tim or Jim will know.............

Before ripping the tractor apart and spending $. Why not use a pressure gauge on various ports and find out what is happening?

Junction block(parts key #24A/24B) is all my "CRS" will come up with. Pressure control valve(parts key #6) could also be at fault.

Yes the 4230 has that block, it is where the oil pressure goes up to the attenuator and on into the cab it is a junction block, and yes that bolt holding it to the trans case is often broke.

Had a noise in my 4010. Kinda a sharp rap/knock...went away when lifting the loader...worse at higher RPMs....worse when hot.
Traced it to the Hyd pump....thinking a delivery valve...pulled the pump down and everything looked good, resealed. Noticed the coupler "tightening bolts" (on the split, for the splines) were loose when removing the pump. Reinstalled the pump, tightened them.

No noise.....

The only thing I had changed was to tighten the coupling bolts so the splines in the coupler clamped on the pump shaft.

Removed, resealed the pump for nothing...Oh well.

You don't have to "rip the tractor apart" to pull the pump driveshaft. Remove the third link bracket, remove the plug underneath and slide it out. Worn off hex on the pump shaft is a common deal with Quad-Ranges, and he wasn't wrong to check it. Setting up to check transmission pump flow takes considerably more work than pulling the driveshaft.
