Hello all. I have a mystery on my hands and need some help. My father in law had a Model M and was restoring it up until he passed away. My wife and I took on the tractor to keep it in the family. Being a career fireman...I know little about JD Model M tractors...or is it a Model 40...I don't know. What I have read, and looked up...it looks like a Model M from the front to the pedestal, but a 40 from there back! Can this be possible? Or are there any Model M's with a 3 point hitch? Thanks to anyone who can help out.

As far as I know, there was never an M with a factory 3-point hitch. There are a variety of conversion kits around to add one but they all came originally with a yoke style drawbar that hitched to proprietary implements.

There are all kinds of three point hitches on M's. They didn't come that way but the average person woulden't know that. Post a pic.

ser# for a M is on the dash withthe switch, ser# for a 40 is on the left-side of the clutch housing.

I'll get one loaded as soon as I can. Maybe get some help identifying exactly what I have. The wife told me her dad had said at one time that it was 2 tractors combined into one. I'm wondering if I have an M with a 40 back side??? If thats the case...I guess I am the proud owner of a JD M-40 :)

I found the plate on the pedestal with the M serial number. But everything from the gear shift back just doesn't match up to any other M I have seen. Would you happen to have any info on the serial numbers that are on the rear axle? They start with the letter "M" and followed by a few numbers. Would this help me identify what tractor they belong to?

That's just a part number. M 51 T on both of mine - right rear. You can download the parts book free from jdparts to check other numbers.
