oil pump on model M

No 1 cylinder at the top of compression stroke. DC or TC on the flywheel centered in the timing window. Narrow side of the drive slot toward the outside of the engine and running straight with the block front to rear.

Slot will turn with gear teeth as it's installed so you will have to turn it a little past straight when you start so it will be even when you finish. Pretty much the same as installing a distributer in an old truck only the gear teeth are on the pump.

M-MAN
The drive slot on the oil pump is the same on both sides,.125 in, so I am going to assume as long as the drive slot is parrallel with the engine block and cylenders the would be correct???

It's easier to notice the offset on the 'male' end at the bottom of the distrbutor shaft than 'female' end at the top of the oil pump. There should definitely be an offset.

You basically have to get the pump installed so the distributor rotor is pointing to the ignition path/sparkplug for the #1 cylinder. (The cylinder should be set more-or-less at top-dead-center of the compression stroke.) If you install the oil pump and the rotor is not pointing to the contact for the #1 cylinder, turn the oil pump 180 degrees and then see how things line up.

The distributor should be lined up pretty close to what is shown in the picture.

M-Man...that was the best summary of oil pump installation I've seen so far.

Seems like this topic comes up frequently. Can anybody make a sketch/drawing that would summarize how to install the pump correctly without the installation tool? IT would be handy to have a document like this to put in the Research&Info section.

Thanks for the help guys, I think I got it figured out now, but I went and twisted off the cone shaped keeper bolt so I have to drill it out. Maybe I should go watch football for the rest of the day.

That'll rurn your day. Football might not be a bad idea. lol

Just for grins, when you get her back together gap the points at .019 , set the plug posts to read 5 till 3 (clockface) looking straight in and lock down the dist. Crank her up , full throttle & see if SPARK is showing in the window with the timing light.
