John Deere B grain drill prices!?!

Hey all,

I have an 8 foot clutch lift model B drill I bought for $150 a couple years back. I wouldn't mind getting a bigger drill with hydro lift. When looking through craigs list and tractor house, I was amazed how much people are asking for hydro lift model B drills. One guy was asking 3 grand! You can buy an 8000 series for as much. as many are asking. Are they just delusional or are the B drills as good or better the an 8000 series?

Looks like the ol' model B is gonna make it another year...

Model B drills were built for many years but I'd take an 8000 series over a model B because of better parts availability and more seed box capacity.

I went looking for an FB-B or a B,B-A, B-B and I was
shocked as well. I felt stupid for selling my two
part drills for scrap at 150.

I've noticed the same thing. Asking price and selling are two different things. I think if people are getting more than a few hundred for them the market isn't small farmers but food plot/hunters wich seem to be growing in many states.

I've noticed this too and wondered if any actually sell for even half the asking price. I bought my 16-8 B for $50 about five years ago, put about $75 worth of parts on it (including new inner tubes plus the mounting/dismounting labor, a few springs, and a seed meter gate) and it works fine. I use it to sow 10+ acres of wheat each fall.

I saw a nice B drill with small seedbox sell for $950 a few months ago. It was nice though... It was field worthy. Tires were good, seed tubes were good, had all of the drag chains. Only thing that needed attention was the step boards. They had some dryrot issues.

Only downfall I saw was the single disk openers, but the bearings seemed good in the and the disks were in good shape.

Were all Deere drills with small seed attatchment fitted with single disk openers?

Type of openers were an option just like the small seed attachment or type of lifts. I think dealer location when the drills were new had an effect on opener types. I don't remember ever assembling a model B with double disk openers and I assembled many of them. There are 2 model B drills for sale locally for $300 each

Hey Jim,

Yep, there are better deals to be found, I'm just amazed at how much some are asking. There's one in Illinois on tractor house right now that has row markers. You ever spec one out with them? How'd they lift?

I bought mine off CL about 4 years ago. I went and looked at a wider hydro lift one a couple weeks back. He wanted $375. When we dropped it and rolled it forward, it didn't engage. I looked around and saw cracks in the castings around the wheels. I wonder if it had been run backward. It stayed where I found it.

Farm auctions are where I'm gonna find my next one, I expect.
