I guess it's my turn in the barrel with leaking lower seal. Got the pedestal out, no problem. Made a 6.5x6.5 wood box out of 2x12's like the pictures on the link I found researching this forum. Pounded on the shaft to break the gear loose until I"m blue in the face, can"t get it to move. Got .035 end play on the shaft, placed a .035 shim between the gear and the housing so I know it should move at least that much. Won"t budge with a 4 lb hammer. Is it safe to heat the gear hub? Or any other suggestions?

You can hit that shaft pretty hard if you do it smart.

Loosen the cap screw about a turn or 1 1/2 turns, so that you just have a bit of a gap between the gear and the cap screw head. I lay the pedestal on the floor on its side, and hit it square with a sledge hammer, and they always pop off the first thump. I would not use heat. It's a tapered spline fit, so as soon as you thump it, it will pop off. 4 pounds of hammer might not be enough.

I use a new longer bolt screwed into the spindle so it extends out far enough to give it a good whack with the sledge hammer . Even better to do it before removing the assembly from the tractor.

Got it, laid it on the floor and whacked it with a longer bolt and sledge hammer. Tough little bugger. Thanks to you both. Just needed to know I wasn't doing something stupid.
