compression testing

I have a 44 B handstart. I was trying to check compression on the
motor, but the gauge was reading zero no matter how many times
i would turn the engine over, on both cylinders. Are my rings shot
or am i not testing it correctly?

Maybe and probably?

If you can belt it, Deere gives figures for "running speed" compression as a hand start is sort of tough to get enough good flips at a good clip.

Spark plugs out on both sides, throttle wide open so the cylinder fills fully with air to get proper reading. I once bought a beat up "B" at a sale that didn't have rings on #2 piston, and it ran pretty well. An open valve is what normally takes the compression to zero.

Use the type of compression tester that will screw into the spark plug hole. Check its O ring and make sure it seals. Then if you don't have a belt and another tractor, tow the tractor in high gear with your truck and then check the compression on the gauge.

Do what FIT says and remove both spark plugs.

Stuck valves. The springs are very weak on these so they open but wont close. It will start and run with NO rings in it.
