My Poppin' Johnny Won't Pop

1949 model A - starter recently rebuilt, battery is charged, and it turns over great. Rebuilt carb; gas is getting to it. BUT, NO FIRE. Has a WICO X magneto on it; I replaced the rotor. A friend thinks it could be out of time - but I thought it would start and run badly. I thought it might be the condensor. Any help appreciated. Not a drop of oil in the oil bath; but I don't know that this matters. Ken

A bad condenser will cause your problem. It's easy to check the timing. Remove number one plug, hook the wire to it and ground it. Bring number one piston to tdc slowly just until the plug fires. See if the timing mark on the flywheel is lined up with the emboss mark on the casting. Should be about 3 oclock.

Travis,

By "no fire" do you mean that the magneto is not producing a spark? I agree with the comment that this could be points. The contacts can become oxidized if they sit a while. You might try passing a dollar bill between the points while holding them closed.

Could also be your coil is bad, or a loose connection, or the condenser, Or the cap, or rotor.

or the impulse spring might be broken. Does the mag give a good snap as you turn it? If you don"t hear that snap, then the mag is not turning fast enough to generate a spark as you are trying to start it.

Anyway, I would start with the points if it is not making a spark.

Start with the magneto make sure coil and condensor ar working. Di you have the Mag of then it could very well be out of time and not run...

Kurt - thanks for the response. I replaced the condensor and the points, as well as the rotor and the magneto cap (large black plastic cover with WICO on it - forgive me if the terminology is not all 100% correct).

I also replaced the plugs and wires. What I"m seeing is that the clutch side cylinder has gasoline POURING out of the petcock. My thinking is that I have a carb problem still. I"m open to suggestions, as well as links or materials you might have that could help out here.

To determine if I have a spark or not, I like to hook a timing light to a wire and see if she blinks.

On the fuel issue, loosen the carb at the manifols, and drop a couple of 7 penny nails or similar rods down from thge top on either side of the bolts to hold the carb away from the manifild. Now watch to see if fuel is leaking at this point, and if so, correct your float needle and or seat.

Ok, now I am really stumped. Got the carb off per the advice of you fine folks. Made some adjustments, and got it back on. It took a while, but it started- and ran GREAT! I let it idle for about 10 minutes and shut it off. I called a friend over to hear it run- it wouldn"t start. It took 30 minutes to finally get it cranked again, and then it died and would not restart. At first, when it first started, the smoke was black. It did not contune smoling. Subsequent attempts showed white smoke- which I thought indicated it was too lean.

At any rate I don"t know why it is so hard to get started. I welcome any advice. I have checked, replaced, and checked the plugs again. The magneto is sparking - you can see it at night.

You may need to see if the carb leaks without the tractor running. Like F_I_T said, Hold it away from the manifold and turn the fuel on to see if you have a leak. Could be dirt under the needle and seat letting the fuel get by. Also, could be that the Carb vent is pluged. These are often overlooked. Dandy Dave!

Just to be sure, open the bowl drain on the carb and make sure it delivers a pencil sized stream for a full minute. Catch the gas and pour it back in the tank.

Compression good? No sticky valves? You say good spark. Timing right?

I sort of forgot where you are on this machine.
