4040 seat accumulator problem

I just put a new accumulator on my 4040. I bought it from Abilene Machinery because I have read many good reviews, and it was much cheaper than through Deere. The seat suspension is still not functioning properly. Even with the lever all the way to soft, the seat doesn't go all the way down. And I weigh 220lbs. The up and down lever moves the seat up and down, but its like I just can't soften up the flotation enough. After sitting for a few minutes, the seat gets very stiff. But if I get up and down a couple times, it will loosen up again.

My question is do I have a bad accumulator, or could it be something else? I don't want to send the accumulator unless I'm sure that it is the problem. Thanks for any help.

IIRC the accumulator gives the seat a soft(cushioned)ride along with a dampening valve and a pressure control valve that limits the pressure to 300 psi. Does your accumulator have a valve stem similar to JD? If so I'd put an air gauge on it and check nitrogen pressure. With engine off disconnect seat valve return hose on top of clutch housing. Crank engine and measure oil flow from hose. Discharge should not exceed 1 pint per min.

Most accumulators come "un-charged" and the need filled with compressed nitrogen, I know the Deere ones are un-charged...

There is no valve on this accumulator to check the pressure. It came with a nitrogen charge in it already. I will try try your test to see how much fluid comes out the return tomorrow. Thanks for your suggestions.

Do you know exactly where that return line plugs in? Would it be the third line that goes tees into the attenuator? I can"t trace it under the cab. I see it on the left hand side, but can"t see where it goes from there. The 4040 cab sits very low on the chassis unlike the larger 40 series.

This is the best I can do. IRRC the SGB has a panel in the floorboard that can be removed to access the fitting on the top of trans case.

No testing port? There has to be a valve, or they wouldn't be able to charge them. Is there a hex cap on the end opposite the fitting that screws into the valve? If so, unscrew the cap and there should be a shrader valve underneath. I've never heard of accumulators coming pre-charged, but I suppose it's possible.

Yes, it did come pre-charged. You can go to abilene machine"s website and see for yourself. I think there is a hex plug on one end. I was just afraid to unscrew it because I thought maybe it was holding pressure. I know this accumulator has at least some charge in it, because it works much better than the old one it replaced. Something"s just not working correctly. That"s why I wanted to know if something else could be causing the problem.

The plug exsposes the valve, it holds 90 psi it could be low, and if you check it it will make it low,,,Darn it,,if it was here I would re-fill it and see what happens...

That's exactly why I am afraid to check it. Its such a small device, just hooking a gauge on to the schrader valve could lose a significant portion of the nitrogen charge.
