john deere clutch has no pop

I bought just bought a 1945 A and the clutch wont stay engaged. The clutch does not pop when you put it in and out of gear. I was wanting to know if I tighten the 3 clutch nuts if this will help that problem out.

Before adjusting the clutch I would pull it apart. You will need a puller ... a special one made to pull 2cylinder clutch hubs. Some one on this forum can give you some tips on how to make one. I loaned mine out to my son who is 400 mile away, or I'd tell you how. I would imagine that you have worn clutch facings and maybe the clutch dogs need replacing, but you will not know until you pull it apart. Get a IT shop manual or something similar and do a little reading.. these old 2 cylinders are fun to work on... or at least I think so. One of the first things I always do after purchasing a 2cylinder is pull the clutch apart as most have had little to no maintenance over the years.

no puller needed just us two 1/2 in caps screws about 4ins long and two square nuts insert in the slots in the drive hub put the cap screw back in the crankshaft leave the flat washer off tighten the bolts and hit the cap screw with bfh now you will need to find some one that knows something about JD tractors manuals are good if you are a pro
