I have my 3010 split apart right now replacing the shifting pin for the 540pto for the 3rd time. I am wondering if anyone can explain how to remove these small pins so I am not splitting this tractor every winter. I have read the other posts and can't figure it out right now. Any pictures or better explanations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Todd
I removed one shift collar & pin(parts keys 27 & 29),1000 rpm drive gear(parts key #33) & all the shifter rod components inside pto shaft except the screw(parts key 40A/40B). I inserted in the slots the largest diameter bolt with locking nut on each side of 540 drive gear(parts key #32) along with correct number of shim washers to hold 540 drive gear in correct position with one shift collar(parts key #29) to power 540 gear. One also needs to remove stub shaft and install a welch plug to keep oil from leaking out of drive shaft and then reinstall stub shaft. I altered several tractors such as I stated back when I was a JD dealer service manager and never had a customer complaint.

Tim S stated he built something to hold 540 gear in correct place.

I"m in Mexico right now away from my home computer, so I don"t have my pics handy,,but what i do is remove the springs and plungers, and the 1000 gear, push the 540 collar into place then I fab a "T" shaped piece of metal out of 1/8" stock to fit into the slot in the shaft, letting the "neck" of the "T" up against the collar then a washer and snap ring up to hold it in place,,Years ago we thought cutting a new snap ring groove was a good idea,,"BUT" in hard use the shaft would break where we cut the new groove,,so it was a great idea that didn"t work out,,so then I came up with the "T" thing,,there are other ways to do it also, but the idea is to hold the collar in gear with out the darn pin...

Tx Jim, I took your idea today and ran with it. I got a couple 1/4in grade 8 bolts like you said. I removed all of the insides of the shaft. I also am having a machinist make a spacer to replace the 1000 rpm gear. I forgot to pick up lock nuts so I will pick them up tomorrow. My question now is what do you mean by a welch plug?

Glad to be gaining ground on this thing!! Thanks Guys!!
