JD 2940 heating problem

On my 2940 I had the radiator rodded out, put in 2 new thermostats, I had the water pump checked by a mech, had the radiator cap tested and it was bad. I went to Deere and got a new cap and it still pumps water out the overflow pipe and gets hot. What else should I look for. Thanks, Roy

have you checked to see if the head gasket is blown. Are air bubbles coming out the top the radiator with the cap off and the engine fairly well warmed up?

It's still full of lime and calcium because somebody saved money by using tap water.
A chemical clean may knock some loose? Is there strong flow from the water pump?
Odds are the water pump pulley and alternator pulleys are worn . A new belt or over tightening won't fix the problem either.

Either new radiator cap is faulty or compression is getting into cooling system. I'd suggest removing rad. cap, starting engine and looking for bubbles in coolant.

Have you checked the impeller on the waterpump, known for getting loose inside housing or wearing out. Also I believe you can get test strips to test coolant for combustion gases.

To add from the other post, when i change coolant on my 2940 if i fill the radiator it will push out about 1/2 gal of coolant until it gets about mid level in the top portion of the radiator when cold but it does not overheat. i assume your water temp gage is going into the red.

Thanks I will try this. I took the tractor to a local shop, not JD. I will see what he suggests. Roy

If you have an IR temp gun check the temperature on both sides of the thermostat housing to make sure the thermostats are opening. Also find out what the temp is when the gauge shows hot if it isn't over 190 or so it could be a gauge problem. Our 2950 also will push coolant down to about midway down in the top tank.

Thanks for your reply. I will check the temp on both sides of the thermostat. I put two new thermostats in. Roy
