'39 B - Amount of oil in 1st Reduction Gear

1939 B - Serial No. 75600. What quantity of oil should be in the first reduction gear cover?
The manual which covers 96000 plus does not address this issue. In these early styled Bs and earlier unstyled, the oil is filled through the air breather and not directly into the top of the first reduction gear cover; hence a small amount of oil must be put into the first reduction gear via a long funnel so the reduction gear splashes oil on the gear, etc.

I'd put 1/2 quart in, it does drain back. My 60, before I changed the oil, was noisy in the FRG, drained all, filled to specs and added 1/2 Qt. to FRG-a LOT less noise, checked level - fine. Not a working tractor-retired, but gets out once a month or so for a 2Km. drive. HTH

Checked the Instructions and Parts List dated July 1938 on page 9 under the TRANSMISSION LUBRICATION topic.

[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]"The operating parts in the transmission are continuously bathed in oil which insures their automatic lubrication."[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]

The manual recommends 5 gallons of SAE 160 for temperatures above 32oF and SAE 90 for temperatures below 32oF.

Fill the transmission to the threads at the level test plug.

Hope this helps.

Bob, 1 pint was the suggestion I got from a gentleman who works on, restores and owns several unstyled Bs. Thanks,
Ken

Jim:

The First reduction gear/cover is to get engine oil, not transmission lube. I have 140 wt. lube for the rear end/transmission. Will use 10W30 for the crankcase/clutch/first reduction gear cover. As I've learned, the cover should get one pint of oil. Thanks, Ken

Hope you put gear lube in the 60 and not engine oil.
A&B use engine oil numbered series use gear lube.
