3020 cranks over real slowwwwwwwww

My tractor cranks very slow 12v neg ground gas. the battery is almost new cables are all clean and tight timming is dead nuts on . if I shut the hyd bypass off on the pump off it does crank almost twice as fast but thats a pain to do every time, could my pump be building to much pressure ?? Thanks for any suggestions on this

Jim I got the book on this tractor but don't remember off hand where you check the pressure I,m thinking under the dash panel

Check it at the scv. Now let's back up step and find out for sure the problem. Did the slow cranking start with temp change or did it do this in warm weather? Destroking the pump is a bandaid option, not a fix for every slow cranking tractor. How old is the starter and have you had it checked recently? Old starters and poorly rebuilt ones are weak and don't have guts they should. If it's getting weak of course a destroker will help for a little while. You still will have a dieing starter. A small gas engine like that should crank fine on very cold days without a destroker if your starter, cable connections, cables, and starter solenoid are all in good shape. And yes when used in the correct situations a destroker is a great thing. One last thing, make sure the cables are actually good all the way thru. Old cables lose fibers and cannot carry current loads they used too.

Besides checking stand-by pressure at scv one can also check it on frt pump. If de-stroking frt pump doubles cranking speed then there is an underlying hyd problem that I think a brand new starter won't correct. If the manual de-stroking screw is too inconvenient one could install a high $$$$ electric DS screw.

If the battery is good and large enough cold cranking amps and cables are large enough and have the proper ends the starter is your next place.I just bought a diesel tractor that was having issues with starting. This fellow had pump redone, put on new lift pump, new JD batteries and cables, new alternator with same result and I asked him about starter which he then replaced even though it wasnt that old and it started fine.He probably spent well over $1000 by trying to do it himself when a place with proper testing equiptment should have found it .At least those items are new so it should be good to go.Add on ends are the weak link many times or cheaper replacement batteries.

I would agree with you if LITTLE RED's 3020 was diesel instead of a gasoline. 12v starters for gasoline engines just don't give as much trouble as diesel starters.

Didnt see that three letter word gas.I sometimes read too fast or cant see too good.Thats what happens to us older folks.
