Here is a pic of the 1950 JD M I have been asking questions about recently. Setting beside my 1944 A.

The list of things I have replaced on the M is getting larger and larger.
Replaced seat cushions along with seat frame. All new wires, oil pressure gauge, used hubcap and axle clamps, new radiator. Carb rebuilt by PopinJohn. Along with many other things. It has been fun so far seeing it improve.

Next thing on list to do is have genny rebuilt. I got it to charge but it is less than 10amps at wide open throttle working in garden on high charge. Discharges with lights on. I have been working it to get all the bugs out and its keeping battery charged as long as I do that.

Good looking M. Sounds to me like you have a switch, light, wiring, or bad ground issue. The ignition + one headlight won't use but about half the amps you're putting out so there should be no discharge. 13 amps is the best that genny is gonna do. Keep having fun with her!

Ill go over the connections again just to make sure they are all good. Has newer sealed beam lights currently. Gonna get the original style later on. Working on replacing things that are missing right now and gettin it in good working order. Having lots of fun working it in garden. Goin by JD dealer this week to get oil filter.

Wanting to get a brand new hood and grille later on if they are available. Ones on it are rough.

You could use the starter mounting bolt but I prefer leaving it where it's supposed to be. A little sandpaper, dielectric grease and a star washer usually does the trick. There's a grounding tab on the front of the switch that needs the same attention. The dash ground takes care of the starter and generator so if it isn't good enough for one the other will suffer also.

Your sheet metal looks good in the pic. Hoods are available but grill's aren't.

If your meter can check dc amp draw you could check the light feed & see what it's pulling. Then check the gen wire and see how many amps it's putting out with the light switch on. The switch is supposed to high charge when the lights are on so if it isn't putting out 10 amps then the switch isn't making good contact.

Take your headlight apart and see if there is corrosion. If its original make sure the little copper tab has a good ground on the refelctor where it meets the light housing under the trim ring. I had to play with one of the two on my MT to get a good ground out of it and clean the area up with some steel wool. The light was twice as bright and I ended up with more juice out of the genny with both lights on.

Yep I replaced the front end axle clamps. Somebody had broken the end off of one and welded a bolt on to it. Got a great deal on two nice used ones on ebay.

I saw those go for cheap money the other week. Looking good and glad to hear you are getting to use it as well.
