I bougfht this tractor as it was a seconds tractor for another project, namely a 42 A. It was all set together when I bought it, and zI didnt find out till the owner grabbed the hood to put it in my pk that it had all been carefully staged/put together to sell. ANYWAY, I was going to mount the radiator when I found that, what looks like guides, one on either side built out of the bottom tank, dont set inside the frame rails, but on top of them. I had thought that these would have set inside the rails, and the 2 outer bolts on either side would have snugged up the rail between them and the guides. Am I wrong or right, and have I got the wrong radiator for this 39 A or not??

I have a 39 A and can conferm what others have said. The muffler is welded in a casting that bolts on the radiator top tank with 3 bolts. The radiator core is 20 inches tall. The later radiator cores were 21 inches tall. The air cleaner is also an inch shorter than the later ones and bolts on with 4 bolts. The fuel tank is also a one year only as it is a one piece with the starting tank soldered in it. The manifold has 4 bolts to hold the exhaust pipe. The early 39's had different screens in the grills also. The air stack and muffler is also shorter than the later tractors. Two bolts hold the brake drums like the unstyed. Some things carried over to 40 like the big hub steering wheel, and the 4 speed transmission but the motor was redesigned. Most 39's came thru with a Wico AP mag. The Carb should be a DLTX 18 like the Unstyled. My 39 A has the rare 3 piece rims with 36 X 11 tires. They went to one Piece 38's in 40. Dandy Dave!

The radiator, and almost everything that comes into contact with it, including the front frame and hood, is 1939 only. Nothing else will fit. The majority of the rest of the tractor is like an unstyled model A.
Probably more important than anything else is............get a parts book.
With many of the questions you post regarding this tractor, it would be very helpful if you have the means and could post pictures.
Everyone on here is more than glad to help, it's just deciphering the questions that is sometimes a little tough.

Makes me wonder what happened to the radiator that origionally came with the tractor? They restored a 42, so the 29 radiator wouldnt fit on it.

Whats a good price, do you think, to pay for a 39 radiator used?

39A has several parts that will not fit any other JD---radiator being one of them. You will probably hear from A Guru to confirm this.
