My neighbor is looking at buying a John Deere 1520 gas tractor but the hood has some major dents in it. Can anyone tell me what a used one may cost?
thanks,
John in Illinois

Here is a real good tractor for about that kind of money and you don't even need a hood.

The tin comes off real easy.
Had a body shop straighten & prime mine for a fair price.
I rattle-can painted it myself.

When looking for a hood a 1020 or the 300,301 and 302 industrials used the same hood.(make sure the industrial is not a "hardnose" as that hood would be different. The best place to check is salvage yards in the eastern US as many more utilities were sold there and lots of townships used these for mower tractors. The last perfect used hood I bought for a 3-cyclinder Deere cost $250 several years ago,but good metal is getting hard to find. The price of $10,000 seems very high with it needing a hood, that much money should come close to buying a good 2440 or 2640 diesel with a loader.

Here in Iowa that tractor would be in the $2500-3500 range. The fact it is a gas really hurts it here.

My mistake. I didn't specify what I was looking for. I am looking for a price on a good used hood for the 1520. I apologize.
The lady that is selling the tractor is asking $10k for it, it has a JD loader, all good tires, 7ft Woods rotary cutter and an off brand 7ft blade that all goes with it. My friend is thinking more in the range of $7500. Otherwise everything else is in good shape.

The tractor salvage yard near me wanted $500 for a used hood and grille for my Case 580CK. I did not buy.

As to the 1520 and value? All the small Deere Dubuque US made (well, sort of German and Canadian) tractors bring good money. Very popular. I rarely see any versions go for less then $5000 - gas or diesel. In fact, many part times users lately prefer gasoline. $5000 for a tractor like you describe would be an "OK" deal for the buyer and the seller. $7500 is pretty steep unless low hours and 100% perfect. $10,000 is just plain silly.

I had a retired farmer friend who wanted a utilty tractor in that size range and he wanted gas only. I searched around NY for a year and finally got a 1020 on sealed bid for $3200. It was a highway department mowing tractor with a big Alamo side-mower. Gas engine, power steering, live PTO (not independent), three point hitch, differential lock, and the big USA 2.4 hydraulic pump. Bald rear tires and ugly, but a good runner.
