3020 Engine gas/diesel swap

I have a chance at a very nice looking 1968, 3020 gas powershift. The tractor is a 2nd owner and has been sitting for several years in a shed. However there is a problem. The gas motor is trashed. The block and crank are ruined. The price on the tractor is reasonable, but if I buy it I will not be putting a gas motor back in it. I will not have one of these gas tractors around. Other than trying to find a complete original diesel engine are there any other engines that would fit in this tractor. I am not sure if there is a deere industrial 4 cylinder that would fit or something out of another product that would work.

That's where the problem starts,,Deere only used that engine in the 3020 and the 500 series back hoes,, they are as rare as Hen's teeth,,Some one in Indiana was making a kit to put a 219 Dubque engine in them (which are more available),a workable set up but still a "Frankenstein" operation, years ago we were looking for possible replacements, and found that back in the 60's a company (FMC I think) was using them as power units in a tomato harvester, but it was never confirmed, none of the combines used that engine.

I agree with Tim. Used 3020 replacement engines are almost made of unobtainable material. Plus if something happened to be wrong with the PS trans you're looking at MEGA $$$$$$$$$$$ in repairs

Would the front half of a 4020 bolt up to the 3020 back half? 4020 power shift transmissions are expensive to rebuild.

Yes the front and rear of the 3020/4020 engines are the same, you could bolt a 4020 engine into the 3020,stretch the hood and the lines, use 4020 side rails (maybe even a 4020 hood, and have a frisky light duty unit, that would deal with the larger engine unless you started asking for the entire horse power that is on tap,,,sorta like an 80% duty cycle...

Run away unless you can find a super cheap 2510 or 2520 to swap parts on the belhousing and front ends of the engine.
2510 and 2520 are rare and desirable enough to part out a 3020 to repair the 2510/2520's.

I have seen some 219 and 239 engines used some look good and others like a total wreck.Consider buying a rough 3020 diesel with syncro-range trans and do an engine swap and sell what is left over.We bought a sharp 3020 gas a few years ago and took the motor out of a woreout diesel(10,000 hours and rough) we rebuilt the diesel engine also at that time.It was a fair amount of work but we have a low hour and wear tractor to use on the farm.

Well, that was what I was afraid of. I was hoping there was a suitable replacement engine. Where I work there are several newer (non electronic late 80 early 90"s)JD 4 cyl turbo"ed industrial engines, some running puimps and others running gen sets. I don"t remember the model no"s but talked to a few guys that operate them and depending on the model they are rated at between 60 and 80 horse. I might just have to take a day with the models and online jd parts books and a 3020 book and see what I can come up with. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

The ones you have running at your work site are the Dubque models the ones that are used in 5000 and 6000 series tractors, none of them will be compatible to a 3020...

The industrial etc engines with the starter on the right side, injection pump on the left and no distinct intake manifold on the left side. They fit a Dubuque or Mannheim chassis. The 2510/2520 Waterloo chassis too.
Dubuques work better than Waterllo's b.t.w. if transplanted into highway vehicles.
The 3020 with it's Waterloo chassis uses a Waterloo engine with the starter on the left, injection pump on the right and the exhaust and intake manifolds jammed onto the left side.
Sorry but unless you are handy in the machine shop making adapter plates and front mounts. That 3020 is just something to look at.
If you ever found a rough 2510 or 2520. Would be better to use the 3020 to repair the 2510/2520.
