I have a 1945 JD model A and live in central Georgia where the temperature rarely gets below 32 degrees F for any length of time. The service manual calls for 140 weight oil in the transmission and 30 weight in the engine. I was wondering what others on the list are using in the transmission and engine on their tractors? I would especially like to know where you can get 140 oil in a 5 or 10 gallon container. The transmission takes 8 gallons. Thanks...Ray
 
Truth be known, 50 or 60wt motor is in the 90-140wt gear oil range of equal viscosity.
Safe to say something like Shell Rotella T1 50 weight is better lube than G-1 gear oil.
Won"t wreck the pto clutch plates either if the seals ever fail.
 
I don't believe a 1945 JD model A has clutch plates in the PTO. In 1945 there was only direct gear-drive PTO.
 
We use 140wt GL-1 in the transmission of "Easy" our 46A and several other As, Bs, and 70s.

Changed from recommended 30wt to 15-40wt diesel for the motor.

We buy a 5 gallon bucket of 140wt at the local discount tire store; saw a 5 gallon bucket of 140wt in Car Quest this morning.
