Hey guys looking for additional thoughts on a project I'm stuck on.. Have a 51 John Deere B that we are starting to redo motor is locked up so I'm pulling the block.. I ran into a problem getting the castle nut off the connecting rod. I have three off but number 1 cylinder is all the way back so the crank is at the back of the case. Got the top nut off the connecting rod however the lower one is giving me problems. There isn't enough room to get a socket on it, and I can get a short 3/4 wrench on it but I can't get enough leverage to busy it loose.. All the other ones came off fairly easy once I busted them loose.. It's not rusted there was oil in the case.. I have the top plate off and that is where I'm working from. Any ideas of how I coul get the leverage to bust it loose? Open to suggestions I tried for a while tonight and finally came in defeated.. I will try again tomorrow.. I'd like to save the connecting rod becaues it's in good shape.. Any ideas are appreciated.. I can post some pics tomorrow. Thanks,, Jim |

| Thanks for all the replies.. Matthies idea worked great went down this morning and took all bolts off and started to work flywheel back and forth.. Came out in about 15 minutes.. Glad to have a resource like this. Sure makes me feel dumb for messing with it for a couple hours last night.. Block is set upright on some horses now soaking in tranny fluid.. I'm going to let her sit for a few days then see if it will come out.. Then time for the machine shop.. Thanks again for the replies.. |

| I just read all the other replies. I'm puzzled by those who say "Move the block ahead". How can you move the block ahead when the motor is "locked up" as he said? To move the block ahead, it seems the crankshaft needs to turn and if the piston still connected to the crank is stuck, the crankshaft can't turn unless I'm missing something here. |

| | Ron, He had one of the rod caps off or loose, so even with the pistons locked in the block he was able to cause the crank to rotate enough by moving the crank and block to get his wrench on the other cap bolt because it was only ONE rod at that point attached to the crank. Been there done that and it was a pain. Kurt |

| | I take it the motor is stuck? Anyway, you might try this trick which I used in a similar situation with a stuck unstyled B. Remove flywheel etc. Remove clutch, first reduction gear cover etc. Remove first reduction gear. Unbolt the block and oil line so you can move it forward. Unbolt the oil lines from the bearing assemblies. Unbolt the main bearing assemblies from the case and split them and remove from the crank. Protect the crank journals. Then you should be able to move the block and crank forward enough to get to the rod caps off and pull the block with the pistons and rods out the front.. I assume you can do this on the Late B, but as I said, I did this on a "38 B, which does not have, as I believe the late B does, an oil line connecting to the block You could always cut the line if you can"t get to it. Good luck! Kurt |

| And I have used the box end of a much larger wrench as a cheater bar on the smaller wrench. Careful, you don't want to bust yourself in the chops (you walked into a what?). And then move the block ahead if this doesn't work. |

| Since you're taking the block out, take the block nuts off and move the block ahead until you get enough clearance. Just a thought, might have to take an oil line off also to move the block ahead. chris |

| Matthies's idea is the best one, let the block move forward giving you clearance to get the socket on... |
