I've recently acquired, at a very reasonable cost, a 1974 JD 2630 diesel, wide front end. It's in pretty good condition, but has nearly 6,000 hrs on it. I was told it is considered a "utility" tractor, but I'm not sure what that is supposed to mean as I'm not familiar with John Deeres much newer than about 1955. So, I was wondering if some of you JD experts could give me some thoughts and comments on this model. Is the 2630 considered a reliable tractor? Any common problems? Any issues I should be aware of? Typical uses for this model? Would it be reasonable to fit this with a front-end loader? Any general advice/comments will be appreciated.

I have owned a 2630 for a little over twenty year now and have really liked it allot. I am the second owner and the tractor now has over
seven thousand hours with one overhaul. At sixty five hundred hours a 0 ring on a cylinder sleeve
started to leak so I had the engine overhauled
at that time. The tractor is a row crop utility
having 15.5x 38 rear tires and rack and pinion axels. It came with a John Deere 145 loader
that his worked well over the years. At 70 hp
the tractor has handled any job I needed done.
It isn"t bad on fuel but I don"t do any tillage
anymore either. Makes a very nice haying tractor. Mine has the Hi Lo transmission
making for 16 forward speeds. For loader work
it needs added ballast to the rear, either fluid or weights but has to have something to handle
round bales. Do what B&D says before you make the deal. It needs care like any machine but
will pay off if done right. I would definately
look seriously at a 2630 if in the market.
Like most all utility tractos you sit lower
with the transmission between your legs and that can be hot in summer but other than that it has been great for me.
Good luck.
Larry

we got one at home- rebuilt the engine at 6800 hours- bad balancer shafts...

runs like a raped ape now. great machine got a 48 loader on it. reliable machines and run really good. got big 12.5-15 tires on the front end- really helps with the loaders weight. if you mount a loader used a closed center valve.

Swept back frt axles lessens a tractors stability because of shortening the wheelbase BUT I've seen many JD tractors with sweptback frt axles that had frt end loaders on them.

The 2630 could be had with swept back front axle.
Front end loaders are not recommended with the swept back front axle.

Excellent if maintained, like any other machine. A headache if abused.
Test the coolant ph and additive strength. Not talking about level of freeze protection .
Inspect trans oil filter, clean trans screen and get back to us. A complete trans oil change maybe a good idea.

A frt end loader will work fine on a 2630. Be sure and get a closed center hyd control valve.
