4010 diesel has a fair amount of blowby and pushing oil out blowby tube. dont know much about the engine. but starts and runs real good. am i looking at an overhaul or head job? or what else could be causing this. also the tractor will lose its power steering all at once. brakes and other hyds will work fine. what could be causing that. thanks. joe.

That engine has a ventilator pump on it . Has the oil been changed and what has it been doing the last few months ,chores and piddling around can cause a moisture build up and the vent pump makes this look bad. I would work the tractor and see what oil consumption is . You can take the tappet cover off and learn a lot .

what do i look for by taking valve cover off? i have seen the ventilator pump line crimped shut before on other tractors. why do they do that? this tractor didnt get worked very hard. lots of tractor rides.

For as much work as you're gonna do already, and as long as the head is gonna take a trip to the machine shop for a few days, you might as well do an in-frame on the engine. New pistons and liners, a fresh head, and that tractor will give you many years of good service.

OH as other suggest. I would not just grind the valves, because if there is seat wear you will drop compression. There is a spec on valve height.

Just as well completely O.H.it using good parts and have it done right and it will give you years of service.

I'm with Larry, pull it down and do it right, you most likely have a piston scoring, it will soon seize and take out the rod bearing and maybe even the crankshaft, as for the steering, the valve needs cleaned and re-calibrated by some one that understands them, I have a way to do that here in my shop and bench test it to be "sure" it's right..

I think reworking the cyl head would make blow-by worse not better. New pistons & liners is the only cure for blow-by. If only the steering quits then I think control valve under steering wheel would be the problem.

Agree on the head rework comment. With new valve seating
surfaces, the combustion pressures rise and do as you said.

Years ago dad had a '66 Chev V8 and it needed a valve job. Got the
valve job and lo and behold then it needed rings.

I assumed that the guy that did the work left some lapping
compound on the seats, but later learned what I just said.
