Hi, Did a fairly mager overhaul on a 39 John Deere H. [oil pump rings valve carb kit mag and many more things. Got it started and let it run about ten minuts, started it several more times that day each time ittook off on the first or segond pull. The next day I put the choke on half way and it started on the second pull, no miss and no smoke. Drove it about a half mile then shut it down. To day, two days later I turned it about a half turn and it locked up, turned backwards about one turnand it lockedup again,took out #1 spark plug and the water ran out , turned the fly wheel over and a bunch more water shot out. What could I have done wrong? I used a tourch wrench on the head bolts and a good new head gasket. the head was done by a reputable machine shop and they found no cracks. Can someone tell me what I should look for? I am beat. Thanks for any help.-----Harold |

| Harold, on your overhaul, did you deck the block and head? I ask because every block I've ever worked on was off at least 15-20thou. |

| Have you RE-Torqued the Head bolts..?? Be SURE and have it not just "warmed-up"..but FULLY Heat-saturated, while you re-torque.. DO refer to the proper tightening Sequence... Clyde. |

| have pulled & reinstalled the head on my 37 "A" three times using the same gasket ...Fel-Pro gasket... spray both sides with coppercoat & it won't leak ...I use coppercoat on all my headgaskets & have never had one leak...my puller has a copper head gasket with no "O" rings sealed only with coppercoat ..it runs 325psi cyl. pressure & 12.5 cr. no problems ....take care |

| | Harold, things like that can be very discouraging, but they do happen. The most likely culprit is a leak at the head gasket. One must be very concerned about the quality of gasketed surfaces (head and block, for example). As a kid many, many years ago, I worked for a mechanic who was very fussy about making sure all gasket surfaces were absolutely clean, right down to shiny metal. And I had the unpleasant job of scraping, scraping, and more scraping until he was satisfied. And he always (and I still do) used Permatex #3 Aviation Form-A-Gasket sealant on both sides of the gasket, especially around openings in the water jacket. So, if there are any microscopic scratches in the surface, the Permatex sealer will close those up. Needless to say, if the block or head surfaces have scratches or machine marks you can detect with a fingernail, or if they are warped and not flat, those conditions must be corrected or leaks may happen. Unfortunately, you don't have much choice except to tear things down. See if you can find the water trace on the head gasket. Sometimes the residual rust in coolant will leave a bit of a trail where the water has been leaking. When you reassemble (with a new head gasket, of course), make sure all the mating surfaces are absolutely clean and smooth. And as NoDakInMn mentioned, it's always good practice to retorque the head fasteners after the first good warm-up. Things have a tendency to relax after the first serious thermal cycle, and the re-torqueing will help prevent problems in the future. Good luck... |

| I too and lots of other here use Permatex #3 Aviation Form-A-Gasket. I had a leaky B after two years of putting the head on with silver paint like some do. Used #3 on the head 12 years ago and still no problems. Have done others that way too and none have leaked. |

| Did you retorque the head after the engine was warmed up the first time to allow for expansion? If not, your head bolts may not be properly torqued now. |
