I have a JD 420C with loader that was pretty much restored twenty years ago. The crawler has had some occasional hard use but sits most of the time. Recently I got it cleaned up and running after sitting a year to take to a local fair. The water pump gave out and when I drained the antifreeze there seemed to be a good bit of oil. Doesn't appear to have antifreeze in the oil. Any ideas of the cause?

Leaking oil cooler is a possibility.

You might want to give the cooling system a good flush/clean and refill it with new coolant ande see if it happens again. Could anyone have added oil by mistake to the coolant or possible vandelism? Maybe there is actually nothing wrong other than contamination.

Thanks Gene, I don't see the possibility of vandalism as the machine is kept in a very secure, private location. Since the anti-freeze had not been changed, only checked for freeze and fill level the last twenty years I suspected it was probably an environmental time issue. I steam cleaned the water jacket and radiator out real well but hated to put it all back together if there was some other underlying issue. I put a brand new head on the engine when I did the restoration but I assumed I would have anti-freeze in the oil if the head/gasket was the problem. Thanks again for the input.
