After I replaced the head and mainfolds on the 60 I aquired this spring, I fired it up and it ran kind of rough and I thought that the carb needed cleaning. But on closer examination, it seems that the governer is surging as it speeds up and then slows down and this is in time with the throttle arm opening and closing the throttle plate. When I hold the throttle arm still, the engine evens out and runs at a steady speed.
Any thoughts on what is causing this? |

| While a drizzle made it hard to do a complete check, I was not able to restrain myself and I removed the throttle rod and advanced the speed lever and the throttle plate to wide open and lo and behold it aligns with the hole and is not 1/2 hole short. I cannot wait to make the adjustment and see the result!
Thanks!

Yes, that will definately cause the problem you are experiencing. The half hole short is used to pull slightly against the leaf spring, which pulls slightly on the governor internal mechanism, and it removes all the play and clearances between the sliding bushing, weights and fork. Too much tension and you can get abrupt speed changes, too loose and the governor can't respond crisply, so it lags that engine speed, so it hunts. |

| I agree with what Frank said. Especially if you replaced the head and the manifold. Your old head and or manifold or new head and manifold could be or could have been milled making the distance from your carburator to the governor arm longer or shorter than your original head and manifold. If you get the rod between the governor out of adjustment, you will get the reving up and down of the engine like you are describing. Dont ask me how I know!! LOL!! BTDT!! I actually replaced a lot on my 60 when rebuilding it last winter and somehow put the rod between the carb and the governor on upside down!! ( A "DUH! Moment" for sure,) but even the simplist things can happen to a guy now and then. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Check that the throttle rod is one half hole short with the throttle and carb at WOT positions. |
